The work didnвЂ™t stop with the album release, either: Elfman has continued to issue remixes of the songs, going well outside his comfort zone to collaborate with artists like Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, Xiu Xiu, Zach Hill and Squarepusher. The end result was вЂњBig Mess,вЂќ which was released on Epitaph RecordsвЂ™ sister label, Anti-, in June.

вЂњIt was essential to do that because it kind of cleared out my system.вЂќ вЂњAfter I put the lyrics to the first song, I didnвЂ™t realize I had so much venom in me,вЂќ he said.

He had already written a few new songs, вЂњHappyвЂќ and вЂњSorry,вЂќ to include in the Coachella set, so he sat down with his guitar and was shocked by what came out. I didnвЂ™t know what I was going to do, but I was so frustrated and I was angry.вЂќД®lfman said he attempted to work on a classical commission, but his mind was much too cluttered. It was a perfect storm between the pandemic, my entire year imploding on me after putting months and months of work into it and, on top of that, it was Trump mania and I was just ready to check out and move away. Suddenly everything was canceled and I went into a tailspin. вЂњFirst off, 2020 was going to be an entire year of concerts for me because I took on no film work at all for the first time in 37 years. вЂњI was devastated after Coachella canceled,вЂќ he said. In 2019, Elfman cleared his busy film scoring schedule to focus on a career-encapsulating live performance that was set to take place during the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio in 2020, but it was sidelined by the pandemic. Elfman announced on Twitter that ReubensвЂ™ schedule opened up and heвЂ™d be back to perform as Lock, swapping roles with Yankovic, who will now be singing the parts of Shock. вЂњIвЂ™m not allowed to talk out of fear of decapitation,вЂќ he said with a smirk. So Elfman had been mum, saying he was excited about the prospect of who would be Sally, but couldnвЂ™t discuss it yet. In previous years, the original cast, including Catherine OвЂ™Hara as Sally and Paul Reubens as Lock, have joined Elfman during the show, but fresh talent has been added this season as Elfman said his usual suspects were unavailable as the show was coming together. Ken Page, the original singing voice of Oogie Boogie, will be there, too.
